Hnsker Dn and R.E.M. were the two American post-punk bands of the '80s that changed the direction of rock & roll. R.E.M. became a superstar band; Hnsker Dn never was more than a cult favorite. Nevertheless, their albums between 1981 and 1987 have proven remarkably influential; they provided the sonic blueprint for the roaring punk-pop hybrid that crossed over into the mainstream in the early '90s. Not only did they shape the sound of the music, they shaped the way independent bands made the transition to the major labels; they showed other bands that it was p...[more]

CLASSIC. For New Day Rising, the follow-up to their breakthrough double-album Zen Arcade, Hüsker Dü replaced concept with conciseness, concentrating on individual songs delivered as scalding post-hardcore pop. New Day Rising is not only a more vicious and relentless record than Zen Arcade, it's more melodic. A positively cathartic record, ranking as Hüsker Dü's most sustained moment of pure power.

Zen Arcade is and was a "punk opera" which took Husker Du far beyond anything that they'd acheived before in sound, depth, and vision. This was "Tommy" for a new generation of kids and it holds up nicely and fiercely today. An essential punk-rock classic.

This album saw another change in the trademark buzzsaw guitar sound that still sounds fresh today. Grant Hart went on to make a couple records and inject a lot of heroin. Bob Mould kicked his habit and went on to a praised solo carreer and the band SUGAR.

Spot -- SST's house producer who manned the boards for Zen Arcade and New Day Rising -- didn't produce Flip Your Wig, Hnsker Dn's second album of 1985, and the difference is immediately noticeable. Everything on Flip Your Wig is cleaner and brighter than on its two immediate predecessors, which is appropriate, considering that Bob Mould and Grant Hart have only increased their debt to '60s pop. The hooks and melodies are on the surface, right from the kick-start call-and-respon   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Husker Du's major label debut is regarded as the most even and well-produced album of their respected career. It also represents some of the most accomplished songwriting by Bob Mould and Grant Hart, including standouts "Too Far Down" and "Hardly Getting Over It", which influenced a generation of musicians over the next decade. Eight Miles High/Makes No Sense at All combines two singles Hnsker Dn put out when they were at the height of their powers. Their fantastic rendition of "Eight Miles High" was backed with a live version of "Masochism World," and the marvelous "Makes No Sense at All" was backed by Sonny Curtis' "Love Is All Around," the theme from the Mary Tyler Moore show. SST combined both singles into a single release in 1990, available as a 12", CD single, or cassette single. Great stuff. ~ Sea   [ read more ]
