2000, Merge Records
The Spinanes (Rebecca Gates and Scott Plouf) blossomed out of the fertile early '90s indie scene that was the American Northwest, bringing the wistful pop of Olympia's K Records south to Portland. Even their first recordings reveal that the Spinanes were clearly a unique item, from their line-up (a guitar/drums duo) to their complex, lyrical songs that went far beyond the popular naïveté of the time. In fact, it was their first two singles that many fell in love with and that remain some of their most powerful work, including 'Hawaiian Baby,' a song so universally hailed that Gates herself has referred to it as 'The Song.' Imp Years combines these two 7''s with one compilation track and a previously unreleased song. Beautiful music, and an important document.
