2005, Merge Records
There's a sadness in these songs that floats in from behind the music, hiding in the melody, convincing you that you're the one feeling all weepy. Don't be fooled - it's not you, it's them.
Neutral Milk Hotel, and more importantly singer and songwriter Jeff Mangum, have grasped the nostalgic, melancholic powers of melody with an ease that would turn Brian Wilson green. Like Wilson, Mangum sings of his lost childhood, albeit through surreal, foggy memories that recall the confusion as well as the innocence of the preteen years. Magnum's strength as a writer is that he doesn't work to make his words make sense, rather he lets the music make sense of them for you.

Adrian BordeeleauTranscendent. The only truly religious album I've ever heard. This is THE penultimate desert island disc. Mangum approaches the metaphysical with such a childlike zeal that one can hardly resist remaining a mere spectator. I've worn out one vinyl copy and am working on the second.

Kara InsoundIndescribably moving and beautifully poignant. I wish I could personally hand a copy of this album to everyone I've ever loved. One of those rare albums that literally convince you life only exists the way it does within the minutes of those songs. Jeff Mangum is undeniably one of my three favorite songwriters ever. No, that's too subjective. He is one of the best songwriters ever. No one can express such overwhelming passion in such a despondent (and apposite) manner. This album will, without a doubt, break your soul. In the most appealing way possible. It's so amazingly sad and perfect and potent, it will leave you mesmerized.

Ian FengThere's nothing left to say. A masterpiece.

Connor WilsonA bloody masterpiece. Everyone, regardless of musical taste, should experience this at least once.
