After escalatingly popular releases on Zum and Zulu, Vancouver's Beans are
back with this stylish, spacious, sprawling and shifting (mostly)
instrumental artpostrock that floats over 4 pieces in an easy hours
listen…and yes, I will somewhat unfairly point out a certain similarity in
style with Godspeed You Black Emperor, distinguished by a more electronic
and textural approach than GYBE's now trademark symphonic loud/quiet tribal
swales. This 5 piece experimental music group augments standard
rock instrumentation with a variety of new sounds, including homemade
string and percussion instruments, electronics, turntables, tape machines,
and a six octave marimba. Their multimedia collaborations with artists
of diverse genres see Beans creating in a wide range of interdisciplinary
idioms.
"Beans have an emotional intelligence and humility in their songs that defies simple rote response, or canned reaction. My favorite moments are those that evoke a rich array of sensations, a complex expression of feelings - of being alive - right now - while you're listening to it. Sometimes you can even hear the music inhale and exhale as if struggling to communicate while it unfolds with you. Of course, they're brilliant." - Patti Schmidt, Host of Brave New Waves, CBC Radio
