At some point early on, someone decided to start comparing this New York trio to Joy Division, which makes sense given the mannered, precise fashion in which the group builds tension and (sometimes) releases it, and the fact that Paul Bank's voice occasionally approaches the depths of Ian Curtis' thick baritone. These comparisons began snowballing and eventually turned to accusations of cloning. This is a horribly nearsighted way of viewing the band; a Joy Division comparison is only one of many that can be drawn, and they are all tenuous at best. A couple examples: Bank's tightly wound nervousness truthfully has more in common with the Violent Femmes' Gordon Gano without sounding like a bratty, scrawny Patti Smith fan; the solemn "NYC" surprisingly resembles mid-'80s U2, removing all the pomp and throwing itself into a thicket of reverb anchored by a dubwise bass line. To those looking beneath the surface, Interpol becomes a band of its own. Each of the songs here emits various shades of gray, built on durable arrangements, a veteran band's sense of economy and dynamics, and a streak of gloom that never quite reaches overbearing doom.

Since discovering Interpol 2 years ago, I have never been able to say that any other band is my favourite... nothing else even comes close for me anymore. This is THE best album I have ever heard, from ANY band. Every single song is completely captivating, and despite their constant comparisons to other bands, I think that Interpol is completely original. It is hard to pick one song on the album that is my favourite; every song has something beautiful and unique about it. Paul Banks has an amazing voice, which grips the listener until the end of the album, and the lyrics are really great too. I have recommended this album to other people in the past, and most of them have become big Interpol fans too. I have only one thing to say really: BUY THIS ALBUM. You cannot regret it. :)

It will leave you aching for more, and Interpol's second full-length album, Antics, is good too. (Although unfortunately, more mainstream, but still worth buying.)

This album is definitely an indie-rock classic. With powerful tracks such as Obstacle 1 and NYC, this album will never let you down. Its dark, catchy and has a great melancholy sound. Buy it, its worth it.

After hearing Say Hello to the Angels, I promptly bought this album and found even more reason to love Interpol. This album is slow, sweet, bitter, forceful and a whole slew of other things rolled into one. One minute you're looking for casual flings, the next minute you're surveying the damage of an imperfect ending with your true love. Awesome cd!

One of my picks for the best of 2002. Great debut CD that is more reminiscent of the CHAMELEONS, than Joy Division. Will be interesting to see if they develop more of their own sound with the next record.

This is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Turn on the Bright Lights is full of energy, contemplation, and plenty of sexual innuendos. Most people have been comparing Interpol to Joy Division but the music endeavors to be a larger part of the band's musical influences like Janes Addiction, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, the Smiths, etc. Buy the album ... you won't be disappointed and will thank me later.
