Hailing from Montreal, Islands is a 7 piece band founded by former Unicorns front man Nick Diamonds and drummer J'aime Tambeur. Probably Nick's most accessible work to date, this album picks up where the Unicorns left off and, without departing from their unique and peculiar appeal, takes things to new heights.

Return to the Sea's ultimate strength as a debut album is that it quite frankly doesn't feel like one. Of course, that can be attributed to Islands' main figureheads' past as 2/3 of another religiously-followed outfit, but, it seems as though that would be robbing credit from a conscious divergence. While Islands are every bit as genre-defying as their predecessor, they are so for different reasons; The Unicorns' habit of rambunctious jumps within the same song made them difficult to pigeonhole or even predict, and Islands working of various influences and explorations into individual pieces of pop album-wide keep them from falling under any specific category. And so, where The Unicorns will always be remembered as a fuzzed-out troupe that produced Peter Pan pop, Islands could well go on to fall in line doing nearly any single thing they've attempted on Return to the Sea, or something entirely different. Dropping the trappings of being too childish, but keeping the possibilities of youth close at hand, Islands have the potential to deliver timeless songs that most bands can only wish to create.

Any album that starts with a 9 minute song about swans must be worth something. Also, your girlfriend will like it. And, yeah, so do you.

Islands has produced what will no doubt be the album gracing everyones top ten of 2006. Debut album, ''Return to the Sea'', finds the band already in top form. Stand out tracks include the caribbean flavoured Rough Gem and Jogging Gorgeous Summer, the love song anthem of the year.

Despite the band's pedigree, it's very important to know that this is not a Unicorns album. It may share some of the same lyric and instrumental motifs, but is more serious and less unique than Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? That aside, this remains a great mid-fi pop album, with some really great songs ("Rough Gem," "Volcanoes," "Where There's A Will There's A Whalebone"), the latter of which is one of the best songs I've heard this year. Get it before summer breaks, but don't expect it to repopulate the world's unicorn population.

About ten seconds into the first song, I'm smitten. I love everything about it - the tone, the crazy multi-instrumentation (I think all the indie heavyweights have been brought in to contribute: half of the Arcade Fire, Jim Guthrie, Micheal Feurstack aka Snailhouse, etc.), and the lyrics are some of the best/cutest/most entertaining ever. It carries some of the same themes as The Unicorns' Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? - namely death and being cute - while still managing to sound very new and fresh. Really, it's just fun to listen to, and will definitely be one of my favourite releases of 2006.
