Jawbreaker
Independently minded and adhering to the old-school D.I.Y. punk mentality, West Coast punk-pop trio Jawbreaker's street-smart -- yet poetic -- lyrics, spirited musicality, and marathon live shows put them a cut above contemporaries like Green Day and blink-182. After a series of EPs and singles, guitarist/singer Blake Schwarzenbach, bassist Chris Bauermeister, and drummer Adam Pfahler released the band's debut album, Unfun, in 1989. Independent label San Francisco Tupelo/Communion signed the group the following year, releasing Bivouac in 1991 and ...[more]

RESTOCK. As one can imagine, the founding fathers of emo have quite a collection of tracks that never made it to any of their four studio albums. There's something for every mood on this Alpha-Omega of rare and previously-impossible-to-find songs. Presented chronologically, the journey begins in November '88 with a track recorded on the first Jawbreaker demo (before they were even known as Jawbreaker), and ends 20 songs later with the trio's final studio recording, a version of "Boxcar" re-worked at the [ read more ]

A reissue of emo pioneers Jawbreaker's Dear You. Members Blake Schwarzenback (Jets to Brazil), Adam Pfahler (Whysall Lane), and Chris Bauermeister all went on to other projects, but first, they laid down this classic. Originally released in September 1995 and taken out of print after the first pressing, the album became a cult favorite of a new crop of supporters who burned or eBay'd the album at collector nerd prices. Includes all thirteen tracks from the original release, along with five [ read more ]

"More trials and tribulations than an average episode of Melrose Place, Jawbreaker continues to explore their personal struggles on their third album, fittingly titled 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. Continuing on the Jawbreaker tradition of poetic lyrics that provide a mental image to each song, the band deals with their endeavors through music instead of wallowing in them, making this record not entirely bleak. Providing the perfect flow of temperamental pop to go along with these stories is proof enough that 24 [ read more ]

Listening to Jawbreaker is likely to get you thinking about countless other grunge/thrash pop bands, from Nirvana to Sugar to Helmet. That shouldn't scare you away from Bivouac...Guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach is a ferocious string mauler who adds deft twists and turns to his ultra-loud rush of chords, vocalizing in a scream/sing/shout manner...Bivouac is for the most part a faster and louder proposition defined by speedy guitar raunch and smart (smartalecky?) songwriting. {&"Chesterfiel [ read more ]

Canadian copies of the long out-of-print US title. Jawbreaker's major label debut "Dear You" arrived at just the wrong time. In between "Bivouac" and "Dear You," punk-pop overtook the charts and grunge faded away. Since the band specializes in both punk-pop and grunge, "Dear You" initially came off as slightly calculated, trying to cash in on current trends. Since their sound is a hybrid of Nirvana and Green Day, it's easy to see how the criticisms took hold. Jawbreaker isn't as melodic as either group, al [ read more ]
