Jeffrey Lewis

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Underground comic book artist, Moldy Peaches friend and cover designer, and anti-folk musician Jeffrey Lewis was born in New York City in November of 1975. Lewis' beatnik parents didn't have a television in the home so comic books and his father's blues records were early obsessions. Although his first album bought was Whodini's Escape, high school brought an interest in the Grateful Dead (he went to 40 shows) and Nirvana. After graduating New York State University at Purchase (his senior thesis was on Alan Moore's graphic novel {-Watchmen}), {$Lewis...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. NYC's Lewis is a maker of comic books, tragic-comic folk narratives, and lysergic garage rock. His fourth album is a collection of songs by the legendary anarchist punk band Crass, reworked into glorious folk, rock, psychedelic, orchestral, and electronica productions which dazzle the ear while losing none of the political power of the originals. It follows in the footsteps of his critically acclaimed release, "Jeffrey & Jack Lewis: City & Eastern Songs", which was selected as one of 2006's be   [ read more ]

Armed with comic book, guitar and brother, Jeffrey Lewis spent the autumn months deadpanning his way around the UK. His new album City and Eastern Songs, was made with his touring partner and brother Jack. The album was recorded with New York producer Kramer (Shimmy Disc - Bongwater, Galaxie 50 etc) while one Peter Stampfel of legendary 60s folk freaks The Holy Modal Rounders contributes wonderful fiddle, banjo and other parts. A great album, just check out the Will Oldham tale, more evidence of Jeff   [ read more ]

The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane and Other Favorites isn't a great departure from New York's the Moldy Peaches -- Jeffrey Lewis had once provided illustrations for the band -- but it does thrive on its own range of isolated humor and touchingly lonely autobiographical observation. Lewis' subjects aren't as childish as some might expect: Amidst the comic-strip stories of golden arms and zombie murder, a theme of grief, frustration, and social inadequacy reappears. Keeping the music faded an   [ read more ]
