Jessica Bailiff
Toledo, OH's Jessica Bailiff began recording in 1995 and sent a demo to Kranky Records at the suggestion of Low's Alan Sparhawk. Less than a year later, Bailiff's excellent debut appeared on the racks, bearing the Kranky logo. The largely slow-tempo material of Even in Silence, full of blurry effects and buried vocals, earned positive shoegaze and slowcore comparisons. Hour of the Trace followed a year later, which wasn't too far removed from the sound of her debut. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide[more]

Call it Jessica Bailiff, Untitled or anything you want; the third album from Jessica Bailiff is a delivery on the promise of her first two albums. Simultaneously clearer and murkier, it features a more acoustic focus and experimental sound placement. Two songs feature the violin-uke (most notably the stark 'Hour of the Traces'), there is a tin whistle on a few tracks, piano, a few computer fx, drums, smeary guitars and even sitar. The end result can best be described as narco-folk. Jessica B [ read more ]

After two albums, Jessica Bailiff's recording collaborations with Low's Alan Sparhawk are beginning to look like an inspired pairing -- Even in Silence, Bailiff's debut, combined a wispy, ethereal ambience with Sparhawk's rumbling warmth and intimacy, and Hour of the Trace expands this sound into even more gorgeous territory. The sonic swirls and wan vocals of Even in Silence still make up the bulk of its successor, but Bailiff also takes small steps in other directions, laying out a [ read more ]

During December of 1997, Jessica Bailiff traveled to Duluth, MN to record with Alan Sparhawk in Low's home studio, and Even in Silence is the rather amazing result -- the record frames Bailiff's delicated vocals with near-ambient floats and drones, spare percussion, and rich bass foundations. What's most amazing is the fact that the record tends more toward dreamy ambient swells than anything remotely singer/songwriter -its sweet, rich washes of sound are intensely captivating, and the presen [ read more ]

Jessica Bailiff's slowly unfolding and often compelling body of work has been one of music's quiet treasures from the mid-'90s forward, and Feels Like Home, her latest solo effort for Kranky, is no exception. As always, she does much of the recording and performing herself, though guests include an intriguing credit for Warren Defever for "silverizing." Bailiff's blend of lush, enveloping sonics and a haunted restraint is now something close to a signature sound, as {&"What's Inside Your Mind [ read more ]
