Johnny Thunders

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Following in the footsteps of his idol Keith Richards, Johnny Thunders (born John Anthony Genzale, Jr.) lived the ultimate rock & roll life, spending most of his days wasted and churning out tough, sloppy three-chord rock & roll. He made his greatest impact as a member of the New York Dolls, the proto-punk glam rockers of the early '70s. During the late '70s, he was a familiar figure on the New York punk scene, both with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. Thunders kept performing and recording until his death in 1991, turning out a series of ...[more]

Despite now being hailed as one of punk rock's most important and enduring statements, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' banshee wail of a debut, L.A.M.F., screamed in silence upon its 1977 release, doing a commercial nosedive worthy of an FAA investigation. Admittedly, the record didn't stand much of a chance in the soft rock quagmire of the late '70s, but its odds certainly weren't helped by abysmal distribution (the group's label, Track Records, went belly up soon after the record's rel   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. When former New York Dolls/Heartbreaker John Anthony Genzale died in 1991, he'd experienced just about all the ups and downs rock 'n' roll could possibly lay on one man. By the end of his solo career, abruptly shut down by heroin abuse, he had played an impressive number of live shows. This 1990 unplugged concert closed that circle and showed the many sides of a gifted guitarist and punk rock legend.

The Doris Day song? Yes. Done by Johnny in his own weird way. This didn't appear on the Thunders album 'Que Sera Sera' but the 'B' side tracks 'Short Lives' and 'I Only Wrote This Song For You' do come from there. The cover photos come from the Nina Antonia book 'In Cold Blood'. They show a very young Johnny as a choir boy next to an older Johnny being held in jail.

Following the drug-fueled implosion of the Heartbreakers, Johnny Thunders bounced back with his first solo outing, So Alone. Featuring a veritable who's who of '70s punk and hard rock -- Chrissie Hynde, Phil Lynott, Peter Perrett, Steve Marriott, Paul Cook, and Steve Jones, among others -- the record was a testament to what the former New York Dolls guitarist could accomplish with a little focus. Much like Thunders' best work with the Dolls and Heartbreakers, {^S   [ read more ]

Never the most prolific studio visitor, the late New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders plied his brand of bent-string dementia where it shone brightest: live, and in your face, with no premium on timing, or tuning. Such carping about those factors is wasted on Thunders fans, who cared more about their hero's screw-you persona, than whatever physical condition he brought to each performance. This album drives that object lesson home once more, being culled from the Heartbreakers' 1977 tour pro   [ read more ]

Fame and promise come easy to some; others handle it about as well as Bill Buckner fielding a ground ball. Rock & roll is littered with the names of artists who've squandered their musical gifts, and few names are as infamous in this regard as Johnny Thunders. In 1978 the former New York Doll recorded his solo debut and one of the better albums of the punk era, So Alone. Reviews were favorable, and the future looked decent for the guitarist and full-time junkie. But, in a move that would c   [ read more ]
