Julie Doiron began her musical career in 1990, singing and playing bass for the Canadian indie rock band Eric's Trip. As the group released numerous EPs and three albums for Sub Pop, Doiron also began writing her own largely acoustic material. When Eric's Trip broke up in 1996, she released an album under the name Broken Girl on Sappy Records, her own label. Later that year, Doiron worked on her second album, Loneliest in the Morning, which came out on Sub Pop and was recorded with prominent indie rock producers and musicians like {$Doug Easley...[more]

Julie Doiron is the most entrancing chanteuse at this North American block party. Fans of her work as a founding member of early '90s hyper-moody Eric's Trip will be thrilled with this latest chapter in her body of work. "Désormais" is the French-language record Doiron has always wanted to create. Although mostly sung in French (all but one song), it still contains all of the hallmark characteristics of Doiron's songwriting -- music of spartan beauty and songs that tend towards understated moodiness. Jagjaguwar is proud to release the long lost Julie Doiron album "Broken Girl," expanded to include her first two 7"s. It was originally released in 1996 by Doiron after her band - the psychedelic folk group Eric's Trip - had crumbled around her. The name of the record (as well as the songs) did nothing to hide her feelings regarding the breakup of her band and the relationships that she shared with its members. "Broken Girl" was a watershed for Doiron, showing her to be the sort of songwriter and performer    [ read more ]

Like her previous records, "Heart and Crime" abhors unnecessary accoutrements. It relies on naked and minimal arrangements to propel familiar themes of self-doubt, hope, longing, and sadness. The tone of intimacy throughout the record is like that which comes after three bottles of wine; a solitary singer with guitar, singing to herself, accompanied only by the sounds coming through the wall. Described frequently in the press as an "indie-diva" or "chanteuse" of the highest power, Doiron fits these well-int   [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Insound Staff Pick - 2009! This record marks a new and energetic phase of Julie's solo career with some of her most upbeat and inspiring songs. Direct and painfully honest, she lays it all out in her lyrics while also being almost the happiest woman in town, loving life and raising her kids. In addition to this new perspective, she showcases a thick distortion and melodic pop not heard since her days with indie heroes Eric's Trip in the 90s.

REISSUE. Sweet, honest, intimate, soft. Listening to "Will You Still Love Me?" will give you a brief glimpse into Julie's private world. A world full of nights slept in a queen size bed all alone, long bus rides, and rainy mornings with no tea. Don't be fooled by her quiet stand offish voice; the bite is far harder than the bark. Recorded by Dave Draves at Little Bull Horn, Ottawa, QC.

Goodnight Nobody finds unguarded Julie Doiron, efficiently but undeliberately creating her first masterpiece in a few days time at three different locations. This is similar to how Bob Dylan approached the making of his classic 60's output, ploughing through a studio in two to three days with a gangly crew of studio musicans. The result of such am approach is a collection of songs that all are "allowed" to speak for themselves. Their instinctive "rawness" remains intact, not cooked out by incessant k   [ read more ]
