Junior Boys

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

A Hamilton, Ontario-based electronic pop group, Junior Boys began as a duo with its duties split between Jeremy Greenspan and Johnny Dark. Influenced by a number of music sectors -- including arty synth pop, minimal techno, U.K. garage, and contemporary hip-hop -- they made a demo with no positive results. Dark opted to leave the group, but former Warp employee Nick Kilroy eventually heard the songs and became interested enough to begin his KIN label with Junior Boys as its first artist. Engineer Matt Didemus joined Greenspan, and t...[more]

The Canadian-based duo has emerged with a pop statement that's easily one of the best albums of the year. It's a work that exhibits a confident mix of focus, clarity, and ambition. From the upbeat single, "In The Morning" to the somber triptych that closes the record, which touches such kindred spirits as Sylvian, Ferry, and Sinatra, Junior Boys manage to tease soul and longing out of their machines in a way that few have dared to try.[ read more ]

2XCD REISSUE. Includes second CD with Fennesz remix of "Last Exit" and Manitoba remix of "Birthday" and two new tracks: "Unbirthday" and "A Certain Association." There's no hype accompanying this group's assured ascent, because Junior Boys are not particularly fashionable (yet), and their sensitive, soulful, serene sound tends to provoke a reflective, measured response from those who hear it, rather than the usual premature ejaculation of superlatives. Critics love to try to categorize Junior Boys, to pin d   [ read more ]

This EP gathers a dizzying array of talents from the world of electronic music to bring their own personal touch to the music of Junior Boys: Carl Craig's contribution is a subtle and brooding epic, Hot Chip's is a dreamy organic take, Tensnake shifts gears from minimalist house to four-on-the-floor electric dreams, Kode 9 offers a deep space futurist dub, and Marsen Jules applies a ghostliness that's equal parts Eno and Fennesz.[ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. "No Kinda Man" from Junior Boys was first heard on their contribution to Get Physical's Body Language mix series. "No Kinda Man" begins with a stormy low-end rumble broken by a repeated, chiming guitar chord, a spacious, dubby 4x4 rhythm and Jeremy's plaintive, quietly imploring vocal. An added 12-bar blues structure is further proof that Junior Boys' music pays no heed to traditional genre boundaries. Classic, yet utterly contemporary. Jona and Chloé provide remixes

Canada's Junior Boys have emerged with a pop statement that exhibits a confident mix of focus, clarity, and ambition. Both tracks are a mesh of futuristic pop romanticism and electronic funk. "In The Morning" is the product of a collaboration between the band and past tourmate, Andi Toma of Mouse On Mars, and a stunning example of the group's melodic prodigiousness. Meanwhile, the calm menace of "The Equalizer" is one of Jeremy Greenspan's finest vocal performances to date and the crooked electronic twist h   [ read more ]

So This Is Goodbye involves no input and no apparent residual fingerprints from original member Johnny Dark. On their second album, Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus depart completely from 2-step and late-'90s Timbaland twitter, polishing their sound to such an extent that absolutely no detectable scuffs are left. Improbably enough, the thematic springboard for the album appears to be "When No One Cares," a Frank Sinatra cover that flickers and hisses like a malfunctioning neon sign.   [ read more ]
