2001, Thule (Iceland)
KANADA is a five-piece band from Iceland. Their music is a strange collision of rock'n'roll guitar-riffs, electronic noise, aggressive beats, melodic hooks and some incredibly strange cocktailmusic. This is spiced up with lots of live percussion and authentic party-noises plus lots of samples of animals, Icelandic movie dialouges and atmospheric soundeffects. Their debut album, simply named KANADA, was released last autumn in Iceland, by TMT-entertainment, a subsidiary label of Thulemusik. The album includes some up-tempo partykillers such as Nitro, a raw, psychadelic song with lots of cartoonish soundeffects and influences ranging from Raymond Scott to John Barry. Marion is a melodic song with multi-layered drums and beautiful falsetto-singing frin bassplayers Doddi. It is named after and features the French harpplayer and helecopter-pilot Marion Herrera. Tommy Lee is an Americansounding rocksong in praise of the legendary Motley Crue badboy. Skop konunnar, the last track on the album, is a slow, dubby piece with a haunting melody which finally fades into mysterious long piano-chords. They played a support slot for Jimi Tenor earlier this year. Live at their best Kanada have driven crowds into a frenzy of party-mania and general madness. At their worst they have been littered with ashtrays and beerbottles from an angry mob of middle-aged men and their sulking wifes.
