Kinski

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

While debating the merits of analog vs. digital recording in a Seattle pub, guitarist Chris Martin and bassist Lucy Atkinson were interrupted by the bartender, drummer Dave Weeks. He said, definitively, that analog was superior; thus Kinski came into being. This same spontaneity would come to define their multi-layered noise-rock, reminiscent of Sonic Youth at their most experimental. Kinski began playing live in 1998. By the summer of 1999, the trio had released its first record, Space Launch for Frenchie. With six songs clocking in at 45 minutes, it inevita...[more]

Seattle's Kinski imbibes avant?rock's intoxicating brew only to spit back with confidence a new brand of heady, forward?thinking music that defies any easy reference. After two critically?acclaimed full length releases, the band caught the ear of Sub Pop and have become the label's latest signing. As luck would have it, Strange Attractors is proud to be able to release the double LP format of Airs Above Your Station, Kinski's massive, genre?bending third album. Alpine Static is Kinski's second full-length for Sub Pop and finds the band capturing the explosive rush and emotional power of their live shows. Recorded in Seattle in January and February of 2005 by Randall Dunn, Alpine Static is an immediate, visceral record. And while many of the songs wage an unreservedly primal attack with bared teeth and claw, the album as a whole offers a means of transport through a range of sense and perception. In their hometown of Seattle, Chris Martin, Lucy Atkinson, and Matthew Reid-Schwartz of the lysergic-punk band Kinski often play out incognito. Under the guise Herzog, they experiment with mood, sound construction, and interplay by channeling their chemistry into an exploration of their "cosmic" side. These entirely improvised sets have yielded some truly heady excursions into the sonic ether. "Don't Climb On and Take the Holy Water" is a snapshot of these experiments, culled from live, practice, and studio   [ read more ]

Their unique evocation of avant-rock is deconstructionist and heady, but also emotive and visceral. NME described Seattle's Kinski as "Like Sabbath in a washing machine during a power surge". This is their third full-length for Sub Pop; a kaleidoscopic mix of expansive, over-driven power and intricate beauty, with majestically fuzzed out guitar tones and spare and pounding rhythms.

"Given the elaborate, expansive styles of the bands involved, it's not a surprise that the self-titled collaboration between experimental/psychedelic adventurers Kinski and Acid Mothers Temple stretches four tracks to over an hour.
