Koufax

ARTIST MAINARTIST INFORELATED ARTISTSLINKSREVIEWS

Fusing elements of '70s rock, '80s new wave, and '90s emo pop, with some Pets Sounds-era Beach Boys thrown in, the distinct sound of Koufax won over underground stars the Get Up Kids. With the disintegration of several Detroit and Northwestern Ohio bands, the band was formed by singer/guitarist Robert Suchan, who liked the sound of famous Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax's name. The band relied heavily on the sound of piano and synthesizer, from not just keyboardist Sean Grogan, but drummer Dave Shettler and Andrew Cameron as well. Koufax's fourth album delves into political and social commentary through narratives tackling the party-hopping, drunk, deluded Hollywood types' reign over pop culture, and the condescension found in so many of the "truth movements". With lyrical strength and a delivery that Rolling   [ read more ]

Studiously building on the momentum brought forth by 2002's Social Life, the Midwestern collective Koufax returns with fanfare for Hard Times Are in Fashion. Jointly led by vocalist/guitarist Robert Suchan and songwriting partner/pianist Jared Rosenberg and enabled by various co-conspirators -- among them bassist/guitarist Ben Force, brothers Ryan and Rob Pope (drums and bass, respectively) -- the Elton John/Bernie Taupin of Generation W(ho Cares) pose many a question across the 11-track durat   [ read more ]

This four-song EP was released prior to Koufax's debut record, It Had to Do With Love. The disc starts out with the tight "A Soundwave Sound." The song is held together by the band's characteristic synthesizer-heavy sound, but the song is augmented with some emo-ish guitar octave work. The driving "Living Alone" is a quality pop/emo/synth pop number with Robert Suchan's melody blending nicely with the song. Practically void of guitars, this Koufax debut on the Heroes and Villains record label is curious testimony to the band's geek rock uniqueness. Koufax's retro concoctions -- featuring two keyboard players exchanging bells and whistles -- make for an interesting listen, but can sound contrived at times. Guitars and keyboards clearly represent an either/or proposition on It Had to Do With Love. This unfortunate outlook limits the record to infrequent hints at Koufax's potential.
