La Ninja: Amor And Other Dreams Of Manzanita

Since Miss Doi Todd's last album Manzanita (which forms the basis for the remixed tracks here) once again placed its emphasis on her distinct, husky vocal, the carefully assembled set of remixers here had much more to work with than is usual for this sort of thing. First up is Mush / Rough Trade operator Nobody, who recently popped up on Earsugar's lovely Jukebox series, with a dense and eclectic, throwback psyche-pop gem. Before too long we are transported magically into the world of Swedish psychesters Dungen, who have the strongest track on this album with a gloomy yet strangely hopeful mix of styles. Plug Research's resident superstars DNTEL also make an appearance, an electrode number that demands to be played loud, while Ninjatune's young hopeful Ammoncontact turns in a lazy slow jam, made specially for dem ladies. On top of the remixed material Miss Doi Todd contributes three exclusive tracks, one of which is a cover of Beatles classic 'Norwegian Wood' - complete with the obligatory 60s lounge charm that works a treat. Great stuff.
