Le Tigre
Originally conceived as the live backing band for her Julie Ruin solo project, Bikini Kill founder and quintessential riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna formed Le Tigre, another bold, feminist-oriented trio, with filmmaker Sadie Benning and zine creator Johanna Fateman in 1998. Borrowing a page from Hanna's Julie Ruin output, Le Tigre mixed punk's directness and politics with playful samples, eclectic pop, and lo-fi electronics. The group also added multimedia and performance art elements to their live shows, which often featured support from like-mi...[more]

Insound Staff Pick - 2008! New York City's Le Tigre's collaboration is a deliriously addictive, hybrid sound the band calls "feminist punk electronic music." It's a mix of drum-machine samples, synth hooks, buzzing guitar loops, gang vocals, and foolproof bass-lines. Le Tigre's roots go all the way back to a Bikini Kill show in Portland, Oregon: Johanna, in the audience, was impressed and intrigued, and approached Kathleen to give her a copy of her feminist art zine, Snarla. The two became fast frien [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Insound recommended. Le Tigre features Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill, Julie Ruin, The Fakes, and Suture), filmmaker Sadie Benning (after this release, Sadie left and was replaced by JD Samson), and Johanna Fateman. The trio use samples, claves, farfisa, a live dj, guitar, voices, and beats to make their poignant-but-danceable music. Their sound touches on conceptual garage, digital anthemic, political sadness, and unfinished soundtracks...a darn good record.

RESTOCK. Yeah!!!! Buzzing guitars, chaotic gang vocals, low resolution samples, and programmed beats reference their punk history and point the way to a feminist future without genre loyalties. While still taking full advantage of the rough edges, Le Tigre's new songs are more structurally ambitious, if not slicker.

Le Tigre's second full-length release delivers the rollerskate jams, sampler-punk, and political dance trax you've come to expect from the trio, and it ups the ante for electro-conceptual, feminist pop music everywhere. This time around the Le Tigre sound seems influenced equally by basement recordings and top-forty electronic production, as sub-bass and breakbeats figure prominently in the loud, live-show oriented songwriting on the 12+ tracks of "Feminist Sweepstakes." Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman, and [ read more ]

Unfortunately, when artists decide to commission remix discs of their catalogs, they often end up awash in a sea of predictable reconstructions and lackluster filler material that seem like nothing more than courtesy acts from other artists. In this instance, it is thankfully not the case whatsoever. After much consternation from only releasing a few of these tunes on vinyl, the ladies of Le Tigre made the excellent decision to supply [ read more ]
