2010, Columbia | Legacy
Dave Brubeck, one of the most influential and respected pianists in modern jazz, celebrates his ninetieth birthday on December 6, 2010. The ninetieth anniversary celebration kicks off with a 2xCD, twenty-one track compilation of his Columbia years. Hand-picked by Brubeck himself, it spans the years 1954-1970, and draws prime selections from seventeen of his original albums. One previously unreleased bonus track, "Three to Get Ready," comes from Brubeck's personal archives, and Dave and his son Darius have annotated the collection, providing unique historical and anecdotal reflections on the tracks. Dave Brubeck - jazz pianist, composer, and living legend - has a recording career spaning eight decades, and he has produced some of the most recognizable music in popular culture. His 1959 masterpiece, Time Out, was the first jazz album to sell over one million copies, and included the hits "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," which played on jukeboxes around the world. Brubeck has consistently proven that pure, undiluted jazz and great commercial popularity can go together.
