New album of Les Savy's brand of idiosyncratic pop with songs that are deceptively simple and deceptively complex. Previous releases on Self-Starter, DeSoto, and Sub Pop. "If the Pixies had been obsessive fans of Boston's earlier art-punk heroes Mission of Burma, they might have sounded like Les Savy Fav." ~Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Les Savy Fav, there name is best way to tell someone that has not heard them about them... like someone will go "Les Savy Fav, what do they sound like????" the only way to replay is to scream "LES SAVY FAV" right in there face 'cause to say stuff like "Like Pavement meets like Fugazi or something" that does the Da Fav no good, Just scream there name in this person's face and I think they will undestand

Hi. When I first heard this record I was like, "This is cool....-Wha!?! What was that?!? Woahh..." You know what I mean. It's like all awesome and shit.

When one first listens to this album it tends to sound like just another average post punk album. But like all great post punk bands, the Favs show that they are willing to break the mold of mind bending guitar rock. This is shown on some of the more experimental and melodic tracks on the album. But trust me, they do know how to rock out. I think that if you are lookin for a solid all around punk album then buy 3/5(their previous release). But if you want to take a risk and see where the band has evolved then by all means...go out and get The Cat and the Cobra. Oh, the Favs are not breaking up. I emailed them when I read that on insound. See ya.

I saw Les Savy Fav singer Tim Harrington hang a microphone stand from the rafters of my favorite bar. He then proceeded to steal billiard balls from a game in progress (a cardinal sin where I'm from). What am I trying to prove? LSF's 1999 release The Cat and The Cobra is good, but could never capture the true essence of this band: showmanship. Anyone who's seen Les Savy Fav perform knows that they are one of the most dangerous and incendiary live shows on the planet. Despite guitarist Gibb Slife's insistence that The Cat and The Cobra would sound "like Radiohead making babies with Elton John" (Hit It or Quit It zine review), Les Savy Fav have made a very raw, angular rock record. But don't pigeonhole The Cat and The Cobra as another Fugazi/Jawbox clone record. While songs like "We've Got Boxes" and "Wake Up!" prove that LSF knows how to rock it out 115%, they show their range with a laid back road ballad ("Roadside Memorial") as well as synth and tape noise experiments like "This Incentive." The real strength behind this record is still the lyrics. Inspired and insightful, Harrington makes you think at the same time that you're screaming along in your car. "You're green at 19 and grey at 22," he shouts in "The Dishonest Don Part II": one sentence that we can all relate to. However, The Cat and The Cobra simply does not do this band the justice that it deserves. Don't get me wrong, if any other band had released this, it would be a masterpiece, but because of Les Savy Fav's reputation, it's simply above average. The one stab at redemption made by LSF is their inclusion of a live version of "Our Coastal Hymn" added as a bonus track at the end of the CD. Of course, it's still not as good as seeing them in person, but it's closer. The Cat and The Cobra is a good record, and you probably should have it. But if you see Les Savy Fav play live (if the break-up rumors are false) and you'll realize that there's simply no comparison.
