Little Wings
Originally formed in the California seaside town of San Luis Obispo, the music of Little Wings completely imbibes the environment in which it was conceived. With a loosely assembled membership that revolves around Little Wings frontman and songwriter Kyle Field and sometimes includes drummer Adam Selzer, keyboardist Rob Kieswetter, and bassist Mark Leece, the band's debut on Walking Records, Discover Worlds of Wonder, was a dreamy, balladic tribute to the surreal aspects of the contemporary Californian landscape. Filled with slightly off-key tales of skate...[more]

After completing the "Wonder Trilogy" of albums (The Wonder City, Discover Worlds of Wonder, Wonderue) Kyle Field launched his next trilogy all in one fell swoop. Light Green Leaves creates a new dense canopy of foliage using layers and versions of songs as a physical metaphor. The birth-life-death cycles are represented and seen through the variations, an aerial view with a phantom presence. Light Green Leaves displays all the power and whimsy of the Kyle Field/Little Wings universe in shocking clarity. On [ read more ]

Little Wings succeeds with Soft Pow'r because of their ability to let slight variations in instrumentation and vocals from song to song develop in their own space on each track. While the folkish qualities of the band aren't anything startlingly new, Little Wings make a uniquely strong argument for their music on Soft Pow'r, and provide the hope to poorly tattooed musicians lugging around heavy amps and screaming a lot that mellowing out and turning down is not a creative compromise. -kevchino [ read more ]

Little Wings is a diverse musical palette created by Kyle Field. The personnel in Little Wings have always been in flux, through the Wonder and Light Green Leaves trilogies and last year's arvest Joy album. Wonderue is the culmination of several years work by Kyle Field who travels creatively under the moniker Little Wings. This album is the third in his Wonder trilogy, a concept based upon a drawing by the L.A. artist Victor Hu entitled "Discover Worlds of Wonder." The first two volumes in the series are Wonder City (Knw-Yr-Own) and Worlds of Wonder (Walking Records). Wonderue is hardcore Little Wings. When Kyle sings you feel a presence in the room. Here is Wonderue under late afternoon skies. The skies are still changing within the four corners of this album. Born in the fall, winter and spring, the tape picked up the sidewalk's hum, the ocean's swell, the echoes in the canyon and the reflection out on the lake. I wonder what will happen when you hear it, I wonder where by then you all will be, I wonder if your heart is feeling near it? I wonder if your heart is feeling free? The latest from Little Wings is meant by creator/founder Kyle Field as a candy bar-sized bite chunk of musical wisperia, a taste of Little Wings between meals, the scent of trouble on a misty day, the foghorn blowing through the night. The last Little Wings album, Magic Wand attempted to refine high realism. It succeeded, and now Kyle Field can go back to his experiments in the realm of the absurd, bizarre and transitional. There are interviews with random characters and the buzz of delight intersper [ read more ]

Folk/country deconstructionists Kyle Field and Whitney Moon pluck and warble through some haunting yet sweet and almost innocent acoustic cuts on The Wonder City, a fine installment in Little Wings' "Wonder" trilogy. Numbers like "Hey Baby" and "The Way I Do" stir up the intimate format the duo chose for this release, without relying on deathly excess or the silly, knowing glances that often riddle similar underground pop offerings. The Wonder City laments many emotional subjec [ read more ]

Another low-key triumph, Little Wings' Magic Wand presents more of Kyle Field's threadbare but still warm weave of folk, country, and indie music. Even before the indie-folk revival spearheaded by Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, and Vetiver, Field's wide-eyed, thoughtful musings offered a sweeter, more light-hearted take on this kind of sound than the music of Will Oldham, Smog, and some of the other artists to which he is regularly compared. Indeed, the kind of gently o [ read more ]
