2004, Rhino
If you've ever wondered whether or not the Monkees could actually play their own instruments live, then this disc is your answer. Yes, they could, although four of the tracks here feature a then-anonymous backing band (the Sundowners) for part of the performance. Taken from three shows in August of 1967, the set features a couple of the early hits, some Mike Nesmith album filler, and some rabble rousing covers, those coming when the Sundowners take over and the boys are freed up to just sing. An interesting document and one of the more provocative chapters in the band's recorded history. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
