Bursting out of Detroit's pollution-and-crime-ridden streets like Robocop after one too many Yellow Jackets, Thunderbirds are Now! deliver catchy, smart, melodic, fast, direct and danceable rock with a nod to late '70s and early '80s post-punk. Keyboards are used not as a novelty, but as a necessity, functioning as an instrument that provides everything from atmosphere to a song's main melody. Guitars are wiry and manic but still direct and not afraid of the occasional delayed part or barre chord. The bass rides an undercurrent, but also jumps out of the foray, delivering alternate melodies and power. Drums are never overcomplicated or flashy, but are instead used to generate a rhythmic pulse that carries throughout the song. Vocals dart in and out of the mix, sung with a sassy intensity. Live at Spaceland 10/14/2006!

As a huge TAN! fan, I'm really excited about owning a copy of their rightfully acclaimed live show. However, I want to give some constructive criticism. Ryan sounds like he got sloppy drunk before hitting the stage.
I guess this recording exposes the "TAN! live show double-edge sword"...the same alcohol that possibly adds fuel to the fire of an extremely energetic stage presence also causes his lyrics to slur beyond any recognition in some parts. As I listened, I tried to justify the awkward singing by telling myself that Ryan was far too busy jumping on tables and plowing through the crowd to care enough about perfection. And when seeing them live, those antics are all that TAN! fans and bar hoppers alike need in order to appreciate these guys. However, even on slower songs like Shit Gold, the lyrics just sound unloved...nothing like the potential that can be heard on the studio recordings.
Don't get me wrong, I love this band so much. I defended the hell out of "Make History" when everyone was all "This ain't no Justamustache!" I guess that's enough to prove my dedication, eh? I just feel that this live recording has allowed me to notice the details of the live show sound...and I feel that there is room for improvement. I say this because I want to be the guy standing in the front of a packed-in crowd at a large club one day yelling to make my voice heard over all of the other indie kids that TAN! should play some of the old shit like 198090 for fun. I believe in a great future for TAN!
On a positive note, Matt just keeps it really on the drums. He "shines" on this recording (haha, just using cliche CD review words). But seriously, he's good.
Despite the negativity that I spread, I still feel that this is a must have for all TAN! fans, especially those who want to have something to listen to while closing their eyes and remembering the last night that they got to see TAN! live. Because flaws or no flaws, its a damn good time yo.
