2004, Sympathy for the Record Industry
The Detroit Cobras are back! The band that infuses old-school soul and R&B with ferocious garage/punk energy has reformed and presents its second full-length recording, Life, Love & Leaving. The group had disbanded in 1997 following the release of its highly acclaimed album, Mink, Rat or Rabbit. The Cobras regrouped around vocalist Rachel Nagy, guitarist Maribel Restrepo, and drummer Damian Lang, augmented by friends including Eddie Harsch, The Black Crowes keyboardist who stepped in to make his recorded debut as a bassist. They've recently added another guitar to the lineup and have begun playing select shows in Detroit. A recent review in Real Detroit magazine said the band is "totally on top of their game. The vibe was pure Detroit Cobras with the entire house on their feet and moving. The clubowner at one point threatened to turn off the power if the girls dancing on the bar didn't put their clothes back on." Sympathy fat cat, Long Gone John, says, "I've never had a record get such an incredible reaction or receive the raves that The Detroit Cobras' first album receives, and with well over 600 releases by over 500 artists I think that should give you an idea of the unending appeal and merits of this band."
