Love in the Time of Recession

The Durutti Column follows up 2007's Idiot Savants with a brand-new album, Love in the Time of Recession. Written and played by Vini Reilly, with drums and percussion from guru Bruce Mitchell, this is the second album to feature new vocalist Poppy Roberts, who also plays electric piano on several tracks. Despite the tremendous critical acclaim that greeted his music, Reilly seldom performed live during the early 1980s. However, his reputation grew quickly, and by the '90s Durutti Column's legendary status make them a cult attraction all over the world. Factory Records released Durutti Column's debut album, The Return of the Durutti Column, in 1979. Produced by Martin Hannett, the edgy, primitive LP showcased Vini Reilly's "honey wrapped in sandpaper" guitar playing and set the tone for twenty years of meditative and fearless music. Reilly has drawn on influences as diverse as Fats Waller and heavy metal, experimented with samplers and chamber music, and collaborated with other Manchester luminaries such as Morrissey and Peter Hook (New Order).
