2005, Sire Records | Warner Brothers
Isn't Anything was good enough to
inspire an entire scene of My Bloody
Valentine soundalikes, but
Loveless's greatness proved that
the band was inimitable. After two
painstaking years in the studio and
nearly bankrupting their label Creation
in the process, the group emerged with
their masterpiece, which fulfilled all
of the promise of their previous albums.
If "Isn't Anything" was the Valentines'
sonic blueprint, then Loveless
saw those plans fleshed out, in the most
literal sense: "Loomer," "What You
Want," and "To Here Knows When"'s
arrangements are so lush, they're
practically tangible. With its
voluptuous yet ethereal melodies and
arrangements, Loveless intimates
sensuality and sexuality instead of
stating them explicitly; Kevin Shields
and Bilinda Butcher's vocals meld
perfectly with the trippy sonics around
them, suggesting druggy sex or sexy
drugs. Though Shields' collaborations
with Yo La Tengo, Primal Scream, J.
Mascis, and others were often rewarding,
they were no match for Loveless.
However, as My Bloody Valentine fans --
and, apparently, Shields himself -- will
attest, nothing is.

Customer Reviews

Ian FengI bought this album a good four years ago and it took me four years before I really recognized its greatness. So why did it take so long? Because it is not an album that is compulsively listenable. No, this album takes work, takes effort, and most of all, takes a quality set of headphones to appreciate. Have 50 minutes to kill? Then turn up the volume put on yer cans, and let the music wash over you. But don't you dare listen to it half-heartedly.

BrendanAre there any words that have not yet been said, any points and analyses about Loveless that haven't already been articulated? Quite simply, it is a sonic attempt at perfection, and damn near the bullseye, if I say so myself.

Anton VegelMy Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless' should easily be considered the most essential album to own for any music appreciator. Unbelievable is the quality of this album, not a single track is out of place. In its entirety 'Loveless' flows like a dream, Kevin Shields guitar will forever leave you begging for more.
