Low
Formed in Duluth, MN, in 1993, Low was perhaps the slowest of the so-called "slowcore" bands -- delicate, austere, and hypnotic, the trio's music rarely rose above a whisper, divining its dramatic tension in the unsettling open spaces created by the absence of sound. Initially comprising the husband and wife team of guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk and drummer/vocalist Mimi Parker along with bassist John Nichols, Low began as an experimental reaction to the predominance of grunge; Shimmy Disc producer Kramer soon invited the group to record at his {@Noi...[more]

Formed in 1993, Low is a trio from Duluth, Minnesota, comprised of guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk, percussionist/vocalist Mimi Parker and bassist Zak Sally. Throughout Low's history, the band has accumulated acclaim from critics ("Low build big magic from so little" - Rolling Stone) and musicians (Radiohead hand-picked Low to open a string of dates in 2003). Initially garnering attention as leaders of the '90s slowcore movement, Low went on to develop a sonic repertoire that incorporated pop, R&B and diss [ read more ]

Things We Lost In The Fire has songs that are lush ('In Metal') and songs that are naked ('Whitetail') and adds a layer of fuzz and distortion ('Dinosaur Act'). Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker's voices remain at the center of Low's music; Zak Sally's bass anchors the whole with carefully placed pauses making every second count. After five albums Low have moved beyond tags like "slowcore"; pace is not nearly as important now as placement. This double-vinyl version has a gatefold sleeve, with all analog [ read more ]

The eighth full-length from Minnesota's Low, and their second for Sub Pop. While these songs feature new elements (looped vocals, drum machines, etc.), and are thoroughly, radiantly contemporary, they remain undeniably Low's. Drums And Guns possesses the unique, subtle beauty and power we've come to expect from this band, but it's also profoundly exciting in ways that are easy to forget music can be.

It's not just Kramer's production that gives Low the feel of snooze-rock champions Galaxie 500. The male vocals (provided by guitarist Alan) are lazy, wistful, and occasionally disappointed, alternately sounding like Dean Wareham and Michael Stipe. Red House Painters, the closest touchpoint for the minimalist accompaniment to Long Division, just can't compete with Low's bare, soul-searching oblivion. "Caroline" by itself is better than anything Galaxie 500 produced. ~ John B [ read more ]
