Lullatone
The delicate lap-pop project Lullatone came together shortly after Shawn James Seymour moved from his hometown of Louisville, KY, to Nagoya, Japan, with his girlfriend and bandmate, Yoshimi Tomida. The two initially met in an intercultural communications class at the Bellarmine University. At one point during class, the teacher asked the exchange students what they had trouble adjusting to in America. Tomida replied that she was having trouble adjusting to American food, so after class Seymour offered to take her to a local Asian market. They ended up having a p...[more]

Since Lullatone's debut on Audio Dregs, his sound has grown into a lusher sort of melodic minimalism. The clean aesthetic is still here, though hardly "minimal" by today's electronic standards. Lullatone's compositions are characterized by a subtle nature, comparable to the works of Steve Reich and Erik Satie, which is to say, they're minimal, but very human. "Little Songs About Raindrops" continues in the vein of his previous two releases, with its gentle, cloud-like nature. However, for this album, Lullat [ read more ]

Using a tiny toy orchestra behind the whispery vocals of Yoshimi Tomida, the duo's newest CD fills the air with melodies and day dreams. Is it bedtime bossa nova... a sleepytime samba... pillow pop music with a subliminal techno beat? Of course! It is Lullatone! On their latest CD they have added more vocals to their cute, minimalist melodies and managed yet again to create a new type of conceptual pop music. As the title CD's title suggests, the concept for this album is "pajama pop". There are songs for g [ read more ]

As befits Lullatone's bedtimey moniker, and the fact that Shawn James Seymour began crafting these compositions late at night in his tiny Osaka apartment, quietly, so that his girlfriend/collaborator Yoshimi Tomida could sleep, Computer Recital is thoroughly gentle and soothing, an ideal accompaniment for nightcaps and dreamy afternoon naps. It's not completely ambient -- "Coloring," composed entirely of ascending scales at different speeds, might be hypnotically minimalist, but {&"My Second [ read more ]

Lullatone were born at night, when a sleep-deprived Shawn James Seymour started making a series of gentle, delicate pop tunes that wouldn't disturb the slumber of his girlfriend, Yoshimi Tomida. You could say the whole idea of Lullatone was, as the band's name implies, simply to make lullabies. Seymour and Tomida described Lullatone's music as "pajama pop," and their 2003 debut, Computer Recital, made liberal use of soporific instrumentation: pillows (as drums), hushing noises, and h [ read more ]

Lullatone have come a long, long way since 2003's Computer Recital; Shawn Seymour and Yoshimi Tomida have expanded their sweet, deceptively simple sine-tone melodies into fully orchestrated "pajama pop" creations. One thing remains the same: Lullatone are cute. Very, very cute. The Bedtime Beat, which is the duo's fifth release, continues in the vein of 2006's Plays Pajama Pop Pour Vous, which delivered an exciting, full-bodied array of sweet, organic textures and a front-and-center rol [ read more ]

Lullatone have always been cute, above all things, and their fourth album is easily their cutesiest yet. If you couldn't tell from the title's polyglot preciousness or the cover's construction paper cut-out pajama partier, Yoshimi Tomida's lispily whispered lyrics should leave little question. Her wake-up litany on opener "Good Morning Melody," which could be the world's mellowest alarm clock music, runs, in part: "it's time for you to get out of bed/splish-splash some water and comb your bed-head.
