Lumiere

VINYL FORMAT. Lumiere, the arresting new album from Devics' Dustin O'Halloran - his first for FatCat's 130701 imprint - represents a departure for the LA-born, Berlin-based composer. Instead of the solo piano work of previous efforts, for Lumiere O'Halloran arranges strings by New York's acclaimed ACME ensemble, as well as subtle electronics, guitar from Stars of the Lid's Adam Wiltzie and violin from prodigious young composer/arranger Peter Broderick. The end product is a collection of miniature symphonies so heartbreakingly crafted that one could be forgiven for imagining the grandest scale film pieces or a master of classical composition at work. Destined to pique the ears of fans of contemporaries Nico Muhly, Goldmund, Jóhann Johannsson (who mixed Lumiere with O'Halloran) - as well as 130701 labelmates past and present Sylvain Chauveau, Max Richter, and Hauschka - Lumiere is an orchestrally-aligned record free of rigidity or convention, a document illuminating O'Halloran's singular talent and vision.
