2007, Smells Like Records
Shelby Bryant first burst onto the Memphis scene in the mid-nineties with the Clears, a trio of fiercely pronounced personalities who imploded not too long after their sole self-titled LP was released on SLR in 1997. With his muse still in overdrive, Shelby began a relentless binge of writing and recording, the fruits of which displayed a much more all-embracing yet somehow also more radical musical vision than the Clears had ever evinced. Breathing that same rare air as Brian Wilson, Syd Barrett, and Daniel Johnston, Shelby's songs swing from sidesplitting humor to poignant earnestness with mathemagical grace.
