Madlib
From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate-digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects. ...[more]

When Madlib followed J Dilla's now-classic Donuts with an instrumental concept album of his own, a series was born. Beat Konducta, the alias he often scribbled on the beat CDs he handed to friends and potential collaborators, left the realm of the unknown and entered the record-buying public's conscious as Madlib's latest nom de plume. While his unedited CDs often wove quirky narratives - and served as obsessive listening material to those lucky enough hear them - albums such as Madvillain and Jaylib [ read more ]

Madlib received a rare opportunity with unfettered access to the storied Blue Note archives and permission to use them as he wished for a remix/interpretation album released on Blue Note itself. The result, Shades of Blue, is really more of a Yesterdays New Quintet album, but Madlib's name is far more recognizable then his alter ego and faux-supergroup, YNQ. Madlib really needs no introduction. In 2007, Madlib went with the Mochilla crew to Recife in the Northeast of Brasil. After spending three weeks there he came home and made six mixes. He named them Dirty Brasilian Crates Vol.1- 6. They are filled with jumps, cross referenced with Bossa, notated with Folkloric chants, pointed with Jazz. Lyrical, dirty and strikingly beautiful this is Volume 1. The title of the mix comes from Madlib's favorite food from the trip, found on the streets of Olinda - chicken skew [ read more ]

Madlib is a man who cannot sit still. He's always producing beats for himself or for one of the numerous groups he's associated with. The CD version of Beat Konducta, Vol. 1-2 (in 2005 Vol. 1 was released on vinyl, and the Vol. 2 LP came out with the CD) is one of the few solo projects under his name, and is meant to be a kind of soundtrack for a nonexistent movie, though it's not exactly clear how the different tracks relate to one other (or what kind of plot they would be narrating!) As prolific as he is talented, producer extraordinaire Madlib moved east for his second Beat Konducta installment, In India. Unlike Vol. 1-2, which was themed around an imaginary film, Vol. 3-4 has no clear overarching purpose, and the 34 tracks connect to one another only because their samples were all taken from Indian records from the '70s and '80s. And it's here that Madlib's high output works both positively and negatively for him. On one hand, he's able to offer an extraordinary [ read more ]
