Magna Carta

In progressive rock circles, Magna Carta are a bit like the Little Engine That Could -- from relatively modest beginnings in 1969, they've endured across 36 years and counting, even as their louder, more heavily amplified rivals from the same era have long since been consigned to history. Acts such as King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer may be better (and much more widely) known, but Magna Carta have stayed together, making music decades longer. The group was founded in 1969 by Chris Simpson (who also sang) and Lyell Tranter on acoustic Gibson guitars and...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. 180 gram vinyl. "Despite being one of the greatest and longest running British folk bands of all time, Chris Simpson's Magna Carta has kept a relatively low profile compared to the various bands its members - like Rick Wakeman (Yes), Pick Withers (Dire Straits), and Davey Johnstone (Elton John) - have gone on to form. By the time this concert was recorded live in Norway in 1978, Magna Carta had already been together for nearly a decade. Here, with the help of an exceptional lineup -    [ read more ]

Ages and Seasons is, as the title might imply, a more or less straightforward reissue of all four of this most beloved group's original albums: 1970's Seasons, 1971's Songs from Wastie's Orchard, 1973's Lord of the Ages, and 1974's Martin's Cafe, all of which originally appeared on the Vertigo label (and are thus highly sought-after for that reason alone). Spread over two CDs, it's a remarkably economical way of catching some of the early-'70s British prog-folk movement's most inspir   [ read more ]

Magna Carta's second LP was dominated by the 22-minute, nine-part suite "Seasons," which took up all of side one. "Seasons" was indeed a grand conceptual work inspired by the changing of the seasons. Its laudable ambition apart, it's pretty ordinary, mild pop-influenced early-'70s British folk-rock. There's a dated preciousness as it varies the pace slightly from jolly full-band good-time folk-rock and pastoral harmonizing to twee fairytale-like narration and almost pop-like orchestrati   [ read more ]

Lord of the Ages, Magna Carta's fourth studio album (and fifth overall, as it had been preceded by a live LP), had them breaking in new guitarist Stan Gordon after the departure of Davey Johnstone, with ubiquitous session great Danny Thompson on string bass. Varied and ambitious in scope, it's nonetheless at its core somewhat milquetoast folk-rock, more pop-influenced and lyrically lightweight than most of their early-'70s British folk-rock peers. Although the strong {$Simon & Garfun   [ read more ]

Magna Carta's third album was the first with guitarist Davey Johnstone on board, one reason for its subsequent immortality in collecting circles. Another is the extravagant packaging that accompanied the original Vertigo release -- the gatefold sleeve was designed to open up like a box, with a layer of apples (from Wasties Orchard, of course) within. Add a crystalline Gus Dudgeon production and, of course, the popularity among collectors of the original swirly Vertigo label design, and {^Song   [ read more ]

One of the six Magna Carta albums that went gold in Europe, In Concert was recorded live in Amsterdam in 1971, and remains one of the most atmospheric concert recordings of its age. A wonderful venue (the Concertgebouw), an appreciative audience, and a genuinely intimate selection of songs result in performances that cannot even be compared to their studio counterparts. They're not better, they're not worse, they're just delightfully different, spun with a spontaneity and warmth that truly place th   [ read more ]
