The music of Dust From 1000 Years is analogous to the gently raised middle finger of a wandering mystic. They are one of the most unique bands around today. Dreamlike clarity lies within lo-fi-psych-folk-ambience on Marble Memo, Dust's fifth full-length album to date. There is a transcendental and resistant ethos in these sounds; one that refuses to tailor to our fragmented, A.D.D. society, one that feels like a dream. "In dreamtime life dances to a tune" begins Marble Memo, and the sentiment grows until the album's put to rest. Throughout the album we find a character burdened by the errors of society. With sad charm, frontman Totally Bone throws the cares of the world to the shade. "To hear the bums snore in a chorus, you'd think the universe was built by a beggar. Built wrong... and it will stay wrong forever and ever" sings Bone in "Thin Reality." On the unmistakable song "Young," the trio of Bone, Jimmy Brown, and Matthew Wissig sound nothing short of a lo-fi Flaming Lips, and through Marble Memo's entirety the band channels the same warm, nebulous sound that made Guided By Voices so lovable to so many. Beyond recording style and ethos, GBV + Dust comparisons are found in background. Both bands grew up in rough, blue-collar, Midwest America but still manage to channel a cultured sound. It's highly improbable that rural Indiana would yield such enlightened art, but I guess it's this peculiar circumstance that makes Dust From 1000 Years' Marble Memo so entrancing, so beautiful, and so unique.
