Mary Piano Creeps (CD)
Mary Lorson and Billy Coté are staples in the indie rock scene. Their band, Madder Rose, first burst upon the world in the mid ?90s and looked to be the band most likely to breathe new life into an independent scene that was becoming stultified by the self-pity and overbearing gravitas of grunge. The band toured constantly across North America, Europe and Japan, playing with the likes of Hole, Veruca Salt, Tanya Donelly, The Lemonheads and more. Now, the duo of Lorson and Coté are back, exploring their musical roots and future realms of sound with a mostly instrumental album featuring a wide variety of instrumentation, including electronics, violin, piano and more. There are hints of Radiohead, Air, Verve, U.N.K.L.E., Portishead and P.J. Harvey, but Lorson and Coté create something original and fresh with a little bit of melancholy, a whole lot of melody, incredible dynamics and vocal melodies that will lull the listener into a state of ecstasy.
