Mason Williams
Mason Williams reached his peak in the late 1960s. A humorous scriptwriter and virtuosic acoustic guitar player and composer, Williams reached the top of the hit parade in 1968 with his classical folk guitar instrumental, "Classical Gas." Although it took six months for the single to become a chart-topping smash, it went on to win Grammy awards as Best Instrumental (Theme) Composition and Best Instrumental (Theme) Performance, as well as a Best Instrumental Orchestral Arrangement award for arranger Mike Post. An album featuring a re-recorded version of the tune with {...[more]

Producer Mike Post and composer Mason Williams packed all sorts of experiments into this half-hour listening experience called The Mason Williams Phonograph Record, and though there are some interesting moments from the clever singer, it is the instrumental masterpiece "Classical Gas" that displays the highest level of creativity. Once upon a time, an instrumental entitled "Classical Gas" was a hit record for the multi-talented Mason Williams. Some 35 years later, the conditions have altered considerably for popular music. Instrumentals are almost never heard on mainstream radio in the early 2000s, unless it is an oldies station playing "Tequila" or, come to think of it, "Classical Gas." Williams is still around, as the title of EP 2003: Music for the Epicurean Harkener proclaims in a title both bold and strange. Si [ read more ]

From the album title you have a pretty good clue as to what's in the package: an electric version of the Mason Williams classic. But it's not too electric -- Zoe McCulloch shows great restraint throughout, working over the tune rather than dominating it, and giving a more contemporary feel to everything. That's true for much of the album, in fact, the two guitars complementing rather than fighting each other. She does let loose a bit on "Gypsy Noodle," which has a prog rock lite feel, and gets t [ read more ]
