Matmos
Matmos was one of the more unlikely left-field experimental electronic acts to appear when their self-titled debut was quietly released on their own Vague Terrain label at the beginning of 1997. Based in San Francisco and completely out of the largely U.K.-dominated electronica loop, the duo (Drew Daniel and Martin C. Schmidt) stood little chance of being heard among the din of marketing budgets and entrenched proppers of popular mainstays such as Warp, Rephlex, and Astralwerks and encroaching big-name acts such as the Chemical Brothers and {$the Pro...[more]

This record finds the band skipping sampling antics in favor of a lighthearted 'cosmic pop' record made entirely out of synthesizers. The exotic and antiquated synths used here heavily spotlight the classic 60s/70s/80s consumer electronic rigs of Arp, Korg, Roland, Waldorf, and Moog. But there are also one of a kind curios present.

Following the critical success of their last full-length The West, San Francisco-based electronic duo Matmos push their rhythmic collage tendencies even further on their Matador debut, sidestepping that record's pastoral orientation in favor of an electro cut-up concept album that samples recordings of plastic surgery and medical technology.

This is the second Matador album from the San Francisco duo who served as Bjork's backing band, scored gay porn movies, and most recently, are famed for their experiments mixing actual plastic surgery sounds with beats. "The Civil War" once again represents a total departure: beats meet folk/bluegrass, closely miked acoustic instruments, and honky-tonk mixed with highly unorthodox samples such as the pounding of blood in MC Schmidt's carotid artery. "The kind of thing that gives the avant-garde a good name. [ read more ]

There's a lot of lip service paid these days to various electronic-based music being "experimental," but Matmos' musical practice genuinely deserves this much-abused term. Using samplers, analogue keyboards, field recordings, and guitars, Matmos make atmospheric, idiosyncratic electronica. In addition to incorporating chance operations into their sequencing environment, many songs are based upon a working methodology of "conceptual restriction" -- songs are built entirely out of samples from a single sound [ read more ]
