On the heels of their last album The West's critical success, San Francisco electronic duo Matmos return with a four song EP in advance of their forthcoming full length release for Matador, A Chance to Cut Is A Chance to Cure. The EP features two songs by Matmos, "California Rhinoplasty" and "Disco Hospital" (a Coil cover), plus two new interpretations of "California Rhinoplasty" by Doctor Rockit and Surgeon.
The rhythms, noises and tones on California Rhinoplasty are entirely constructed out of the sounds of plastic surgery recorded in operating rooms in California (primarily nose jobs, but also chin implants and forehead lifts).
Eschewing any "dark ambient" gorefests as too obvious, Matmos instead turn these extremist sounds into a surprisingly bouncy, shimmering electro-house track: life support beeps become melodies played by "the machine that goes ping", the whine of suction is filtered into a surge of strings, and the clanks and snips of surgical incisions are r
