2002, Tiger Style
Tristeza's "Dream Signals in Full Circles" (their second full-length, first for Tiger Style) was
was well received when it hit the streets in the summer of 2000. The band captured the hearts
and minds of many different music hipsters -- from punk kids (due to the band's past in
seminal hardcore bands) to indie rocksters to fans of more electronic oriented music. The band
literally toured the world in support of the record having made pitstops in Europe, Japan,
Mexico and the U.S. Along the way, the band has encountered many different artists who
were open and willing to collaborate with the San Diego quintet on the concept of a remix
record. Never ones to substitute quality for quantity, the band meticulously scrutinized a load
of various remixes and finally chose the tracks for their latest record 'Mixed Signals'. Included
on the record are remixes by Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins/Bella Union), Randomnumber
(ex-Hood), Marumari, Styrofoam (Morr Music recording artist), Windy & Carl, Sientific
American, Yellow6 and more. The tracks contained therein represent a broad range of
electronic styles from ambient/ethereal soundscapes to IDM to experimental breakbeats.
Although Tristeza themselves never really delved into electronic music as a band, their
soothing brand of instrumental rock is lauded by fans of more electronic based musicians as
well as traditional rock critics. What's more, Jimmy Lavalle (writer/guitarist) has his own
project called The Album Leaf which incorporates Tristeza's signature instrumental patterns with
electronic beats and keyboards.
The relatively young Tristezans are poised to really take the world by storm in 2002. Look for more relentless touring by the band in Europe, Japan and, um, even China! Yes, China.
