EricA solo percussion album from Wilco's amazingly talented Glenn Kotche. While "solo percussion" might make some dubious, this is not an album length drum solo, far from it. This album is a deep exploration of texture, melody, and sound by a truly innovative drummer/percussionist. The first piece "Clapping Music Variations" is adapted from Steve Reich, and that composers work is more of a touchstone here than any traditional drum soloing in rock music. Kotche plays a multitude of percussion instruments here not just drums, and often times pieces are layered and manipulated electronically. The overall result is a very stunning and listenable piece of music. For any fans of experimental, abstract, or interesting music this is a great album. The liner notes provide deep insight into the process behind each of the songs, and Kotche's own raw talent and thought makes this album one of the better and more compelling pieces of music released this year. Highly recommended.
