Beginning life as Jason NeSmith's cassette four-track project with an ever-changing name, Casper and The Cookies grew into a live band in 1998. Kay Stanton is the only one left from these early line-ups. NeSmith has also played in Of Montreal and Helum. "I Am Gone," the final track on Modern Silence, features 35 musicians, including Bryan Poole (Of Montreal), Robert Schneider (Apples in Stereo), Vanessa Briscoe Hay (Pylon), and an African Grey parrot.
