Moderne

Moderne was recorded at home over the course of several months while adjusting to the rigors of family life, the songs for Moderne were sketched out in advance to record drum parts. Beyond that most parts were written and recorded on the same night they were thought up and kept on the recordings due to some concept of "energy" or "The Moment." No rules about arrangements, no special concessions to traditional guitar, bass, drums, vocal arrangements.

The result is the sound Popstar Assassins had been relentlessly seeking to capture on tape, accomplished only due to the democratization of home recording and the inspiration of pioneering “do-it-yourself” acts like The Wrens and The Shins. By working in a project studio the sound could be tweaked into a trademark musical signature, and adjusted to touch upon just the right combination of traditional instruments and electronic bleeps and warbles.
