Sad, Sappy Sucker is the lost album recorded in November 1994, originally intended to be the band's debut full-length. The 24 songs that comprise it mark the earliest recordings of Modest Mouse as a band, evolving from founder Isaac Brock's four-track solo project. Due to unforeseen delays, it was shelved in favor of "This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About" (Up Records, 1996). Although you can hear echoes of the Minutemen and Nirvana, along with slightly larger ensembles such as Pavement and Thrush Hermit, Modest Mouse puts an entirely new twist on the post-punk power trio concept. The band eschews the camouflage of noise, effects, and attitude employed by many of their indie rock peers to create ironic distance. Instead, they strictly rely on inventive, surprising songwriting, and low-key-but-committed performance to lay their claim as innovators and inheritors of the guitar-bas [ read more ]

Expanding upon the themes of emotional and geographic isolation found in the band's previous work, "This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About" finds Modest Mouse mixing slow, brooding numbers such as "Custom Concern" and "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset" with thrashing guitar workouts like "Breakthrough" and "Head South." The general mood here is one of loneliness and desperation, eloquently expressed through both the lyrics and the rhythmic, sprawling instrumentation. "Dramamine," for [ read more ]
