Lonesome Crowded West (CD)
Although you can hear echoes of the Minutemen and Nirvana, along with slightly larger ensembles such as Pavement and Thrush Hermit, Modest Mouse puts an entirely new twist on the post-punk power trio concept. The band eschews the camouflage of noise, effects, and attitude employed by many of their indie rock peers to create ironic distance. Instead, they strictly rely on inventive, surprising songwriting, and low-key-but-committed performance to lay their claim as innovators and inheritors of the guitar-bass-drums tradition. Even though Modest Mouse's stylistic variations (rock-funk, edgy, brittle pop) often reach back to the American underground boom of the early eighties where the band's roots lie, they are never less than forward-looking. "Lonesome Crowded West" reveals Modest Mouse to be extraordinarily focused, as it fully realizes their vision of America as a vehicle for their surreal, sometimes oblique, portraits of modern life. Melodic enough to be accessible but raw enough to keep things lively, the band has reached a high point in their career here.

| Possibly my favorite cd ever. Over an hour of great indie rock that never gets boring. Full of lyrics that bounce around your head for days and paint a picture of America according to Isaac. | |

| Well. All I can say is that this album is one of their best. I am a die hard fan of them and im sure i always will be. Cowboy Dan and Teeth Like God's Shoeshine are truely their best works. Styrofoam Boots is a great add in for those people who look at teh world differantly from the normal standards. Doin' The cockroach is my favorite song by them and Out of Gas is becoming a favorite too. Give the CD a few times around, then u'll all see what greatness Modest Mouse has. | |

| When I first heard this CD, it didn't really hit any sweet spots right away. After giving it a few listens, it begins to grow on you. This is by far the most addictive CD I own. In fact, anyone who loves music will give it a coule of spins and find that it grooves you anytime, all of the time. Just thinking about it makes me want to toss the CD on right now! I absolutely love this CD, especially the song Cowboy Dan. | |

| I don't want to say a bunch of crap that other people have already said...so i'll make this simple. The lonesome crowded west is by far the best MM cd out. Even though my opinion doesn't matter to anyone else...i will say it anyways. BUY THIS CD DAMN YOU.And when you buy it...Listen to "Doin' the cockroach". Isaac has such a good Screaming voice..and it's totally unexpected! You hear this cool unique voice suddenly turn into this badass screaming voice once in awhile.Alot of people say he is a horrible vocalist..but once again that is another pointless opinion by other people. His vocals are so diffrent compared to all those trendy bands that sound the same. You don't need a good vocalist to make good music, and Isaac easily proves that. | |

| I totally concure Peter. People's musical taste is the supreme determining factor in their value as human beings. And Peter, if people don't agree with you, they should be physically harmed. So, as you say, we should hang Jordan. And while we're at it, let's draw and quarter him, and then disembowel him and then stick hot pokers up his ass for disagreeing with you about Modest Mouse's album. Because that's just how important independant music is, and he shouldn't be allowed to voice his opinion. | |

| I think that Jordan guy is a real big jackass that likes sugary annoying emo bands like Rainer Maria. Hang him for the heresy he made by trashing this wonderful piece of music that is "Lonesome...". Beautiful guitars, emotional vocals and an overall feeling of paranoia and brainstorm caused by the urban chaos and the long, endless roads.
Get it! Along with Dismemberment Plan's "Emergency and I" and Godspeed You Black Emperor's "f#a#oo". | |

| Can you say, "unlistenable, indie crap"? Because that's exactly what this album is! With three chords and no ear for melody, Isaac Brock has written one of this year's biggest piles of shit. Exactly how long does Isaac expect we can take his droning, toneless guitar and whiny vocals. Not to mention the band's Rythym section which sounds like a '67 Studebaker running on two cylinders. And as if all this wasn't enough, the album is fifteen songs long (unbearable). Take my advice, don't waste your "Modest" money. | |
