This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About (CD)
Expanding upon the themes of emotional and geographic isolation found in the band's previous work, "This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About" finds Modest Mouse mixing slow, brooding numbers such as "Custom Concern" and "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset" with thrashing guitar workouts like "Breakthrough" and "Head South." The general mood here is one of loneliness and desperation, eloquently expressed through both the lyrics and the rhythmic, sprawling instrumentation. "Dramamine," for instance, with its driving, mid-tempo beat and ricocheting guitar line, sums up the hopelessness of a doomed relationship, while the frantic "Head South" deals with the feeling of "being ashamed of your old space." The mandolin, slide guitar, and cello featured throughout the album give the songs a certain degree of depth that makes them stand out from average indie rock fare. In general, "This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About" is a fine album of guitar-based rock, and Modest Mouse distinguishes itself here with songs whose meanings are simultaneously universal and painfully personal.

| I do not claim to know a lot about music. I was completely alien to it until about 6th grade, and my obsession then was Smash Mouth. Over time, my tastes have evolved (thankfully). 2 years ago, I read the name Modest Mouse, and decided to look into it. I picked 3 tracks of Moon and Antarctica, and thus my obsession began. Some feel they're nothing special, but to me, they are music at it's best, not an industry. And I personally think the songs would lose something if Issac had no lisp :p | |

| This is one of my favorites from this band. Its unpredictable and fun. Some songs, expecially, "Ionizes and Atomizes," are so emotionally driven, I have to wonder what the band went through to come up with that type of material. | |

| Yeah, uh, don't move to Issaquah, there are more than enough fucking people here now, and most of them are just snobby people who live on the plateau....All this means nothing to you though, all ican say is my favorite Modest Mouse song is parkinglot, because I know exactly what Isaac is talking about. PS Isaac is pretty good at baseball... | |

| I just got the album today! I popped it in my cd player and just about had an orgasm. Modest mouse is the best band in the world. At least right now. They kick built to spill's ass any day of the week. I have build nothing, moon and Antartica and lonesome and I would say this album is 2nd best after lonesome. | |

| MM is the greatest band out right now and this album shows their talent 100%. Best lyricist ever and everyone else can kiss my ass | |

| This is a good album, but if you like lonesome crowded west, it is disappointing in comparison. This album starts off with a bang in the first 3 songs, but dwindles for the remainder of the album until the last 2 or 3 tracks. Not bad if the album wasn't 16 songs. Still a worthy buy for a MM fan, but i'd recommend saving your money until you have some extra cash. By the way, Custom Concern is one of Isaac's shining moments as a lyricist and songwriter. | |

| Modest Mouse are the realest thing out there right now. No one else like them. Makes me want to move to Issaquah.

| ...I first heard this album off an absolutely horrid dubbed copy on my car stereo, and couldn't help but think how appropriate the title was...Modest Mouse might not be the most revolutionary of acts, but there's no other band like them at the moment -Isaac's plaintive vocals and skewed insight shine throughout the record, and the guitars get better as the record progresses, eventually climaxing in such tunes as "Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset" and "Edit the Sad Parts"...At its worst the record is pleasant drone, better than what the local station is playing anyway... | |

| These people are all blindly prasieing the album. When i bought it i listined to it a bit then it went to my cd rack to collect dust. The vocals sucked and buged the hell out of me. Then i read a few reviews of the cd (real ones not ones writen by fans) describing how good the album was, and how expresive the lyric writing was (even more so in LCW). Gave it another listin now I'm a big MM fan, I got over his voice now i like it, but i guess that comes with listining to 100's of times | |

| This is my favorite album right now. The trademark Modest Mouse string-loops are used to great effect; Issac's vocals are sometimes beautiful, sometimes hilarious. This thing only gets better every time I listen to it. A wonderful album. | |

| Modest Mouse is really not that great, people. I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I mean, come on - it's just a bunch of whiny-ass kids that are pissed off because their moms aren't making their dinners for them anymore. Get over it! | |
