Though there are still hints aplenty of the subtle beauty that adorned big chunks of "Rock Action" and "Happy Songs For Happy People", there's an equal portion of head crushers on this one that'll leave you gasping for air. | Mr. Beast explains within its title the flaw that grounds it: for as much feral instinct that inhabits these songs, they cannot abandon their given name, and imposed self-discipline. Mogwai has always been a force existing above boundaries and beyond borders; the music the band has produced since its inception is testament to the living song -- growing, organic arrangements with the capacity to move freely of their own accord. Mr. Beast, on a whole, is limiting, the restraint found within the songs denies the appearance of any truly moving, all-encompassing arrangements. Though refined to the point of elegance, this Beast is left with a crippling lack of the wild. | |
