There are two bands with this name, one American and one Brazilian.

Around 2003, Herik invited Ayuso to form a band: the idea was to play the songs from Ayuso's latest projects (Bionic Shoes and Estéreo). Sometime later, they decided to put an ad in a music mall, looking for a bass player. Gualter called and they met to rehearse. - Monaural was born. The first rehearsals tooke place in a dark, warm and low-tuned room located in the underground of Herik's godmother, Miss Adelaide. It was in that room that they played together tirelessly to compose part of their first - and homonym - play, launched in an independent way by the band the same year. In 2005, Monaural launched their second work, the EP "Farsa". Receiving a better acceptance from t
he underground public, they achieved a better penetration inside the scene. The band played in many rock'n'roll clubs in São Paulo and in the country, like Outs, Funhouse, Clube Berlin, Matrix, and many others. In 2006, Fernando Saiki, from the band Forte Apache became the lead guitarrist - they turned into a quartet. That year, they took turns between concerts and rehearsals and started to compose some material for what would come to be their first album. In 2007, Saiki left the band - forcing a new period of adaptation and reorganization; the band went back to the power-trio form and started to create other new songs.
Expurgo took shape: in the end of 2007, the band entered the studio and started the production of their album, with Davi Rodriguez (Ecos Falsos/ Orange Disaster) and Clayton Martin (Detetives/ Cidadão Instigado) as producers, concluding the recordings some months lather. In 2008, after the album got finished, Ayuso invited the legendary cartoonist and illustrator Marcatti (who made some covers for the famous brazilian underground punk rock band Ratos de Porão) to illustrate Expurgo's cover. The band then launched the first single from their album, named "Acaba Logo com Isso", with some inedit material and alternate mixes. In August 2008, Gualter left the band, leaving his place to Guilherme Maia - now Monaural's new bass player.
Expurgo was released on January 2009.
The American:
Formed in 1993 Detroit, Michigan. Original members Chris Johns, Bryan Cole and Scott Zacharias met at the now defunct WORB fm. Noting similar musical interests they soon started recording at Stark-weather studio and playing shows around Detroit's once thriving space rock scene. In 1996 Monaural added second guitarist Brian Comstock (Ethos), recorded at Woodshed studio with Tim Pak and released their Rhodes/Harmonic 12in. Three years later and halfway through the Avery st. recording Brian Comstock left the band (sad). Monitor Interference was released in 1999 on BaDa Bing records, marking many changes for Monaural. Recording was now done primarily by Bryan Cole & Chris Johns, and recorded exclusively in Monaural's dining room studio. Monaural shifted from the heavy space rock influence of early recordings to more experimental sound terrain influenced by Dub, Jazz, Downtempo and Drum&Bass. A possible catalyst to the new sound could be easily attributed to DJ Recloose, who was a housemate and to Scott Zacharias who left Monaural to pursue turntablism. Cole and Johns continued to play as a duo until 2000 when Bryan moved to Vermont to start a family and Chris Johns to Portland OR where he continued to record. In 2006 Monaural was reformed by Chris with the addition of vocalist Joseph Kucinski. The addition of Joe brought a focus of song and melody into the forefront of Monaural's music. Monaural is now finishing the next full length release Radio Signals from a Secret City.
