Mot÷rhead
Mot÷rhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking styles the genre had to offer in the late '70s. Though the group's leader, Lemmy Kilminster, had his roots in the hard-rocking space rock band Hawkwind, Mot÷rhead didn't bother with his old group's progressive tendencies, choosing to amplify the heavy biker rock elements of Hawkwind with the speed of punk rock. Mot÷rhead wasn't punk rock -- they formed before the Sex Pistols and they loved the hell-for-leather imagery of bikers too much to confor...[more]

VINYL FORMAT. With the 1980 release of Ace of Spaces, Motorhead had their anthem of anthems -- that is, the title track -- the one trademark song that would summarize everything that made this early incarnation of the band so legendary, a song that would be blasted by legions of metalheads for generations on end. It's a legendary song, for sure, all two minutes and 49 bracing seconds of it. And the album of the same name is legendary as well, among Motorhead's all-time best, often considered their si [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Released in 1981, the live album No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith recaps the highlights from the legendary run of albums Motörhead released during the prior few years, namely Overkill, Bomber, and Ace of Spades. The band's lesser self-titled debut album is also accounted for here with two inclusions ("Motörhead" and "Iron Horse"), but by and large, the focus is on the standout songs from the aforementioned trio of classics. This alone makes No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. While Motörhead's self-titled debut had performed respectfully on the British charts, it was their second release, 1979's Overkill, that went Top 30, selling 100,000 units in Europe (all the while without proper distribution in the U.S.). Produced by ex-Rolling Stones main man Jimmy Miller (Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street), Overkill can be pinpointed as the album that finally focused the Motorhead sound ? part metal, part punk, and part good old rock & roll.

Before forming Mot÷rhead, Ian Kilmister (aka Lemmy) could boast of having been a member of space rock cowboys Hawkwind and a career in horsebreaking (that's horsebreaking, not housebreaking). He was also, to top it all, the son of a vicar. Having been expelled from his former employers after a disagreement with border guards over the contents of his luggage, he took the name for his new band from the final song he'd written for Hawkwind. Together with Larry Wallis of the Pink Fairies [ read more ]

For the most part in rock music, when a band issues a box set you expect rarities mixed with the hits, and when they issue a double-disc set, it's primarily the hits. But the 2001 double-disc Mot÷rhead set, Bite the Bullet, follows the box set format, as quite a few oddities are spotted alongside classics. Tops on the list of most intriguing tracks is a "rare version" of their all-time classic, "Ace of Spades," which sounds like a rough demo. Also, you'll find live renditions of such tracks as {&"I [ read more ]

The '90s witnessed a surprising and somewhat overlooked renaissance for Lemmy Kilmister and Mot÷rhead, starting with 1991's 1916. The follow-up, March or Die, was woefully subpar and overly commercial, and many dismissed 1916 as a fluke and gave the band up for dead. However, Mot÷rhead then embarked on a run of quality albums for smaller, lower-profile labels; Bastards, Sacrifice, and Overnight Sensation were surprisingly consistent, written and performed with conviction in the cl [ read more ]

Recorded in late summer 1979 and released by the end of the year, Bomber quickly followed up Overkill, Mot÷rhead's landmark breakthrough album from earlier in the year. Bomber bears a lot in common with its fan-favorite predecessor. For starters, it features the classic Mot÷rhead lineup: Lemmy (bass and vocals), "Fast" Eddie Clarke (guitar), and "Philthy Animal" Taylor (drums). Also like Overkill, Bomber features the production grace of Jimmy Miller, the man responsible for [ read more ]
