2001, Kitchen Motors (Iceland)
From its birth, Kitchen Motors has been exploring tension and beauty created through their commissioning of unique artistic collaborations. Their Motorlab series of live events and recordings has initiated cooperation between unusual talents, providing an opportunity for artists to step out of their natural context and onto a stage without rules. The first two CD's in the series included documents of performances by mum, Stillupsteypa, Hafler Trio, and many others. For Motorlab #3, Kitchen Motors asked Finnish noise manipulators Pan Sonic and film composer and former Magazine and Bad Seeds alumnus Barry Adamson to write a vocal piece for an Icelandic choir. Surprised but excited about the idea, they agreed to meet in Reykjavik in April 2001 to record the choir part of the piece in a church in Digraneskirkja. Straight after, Pan Sonic went into the NTOV studio to craft some electronica on top. The ultimate beauty of this piece, 'The Hymn of the 7th Illusion', is crystalized in the boiling tension created by the collision of two stark opposites. It's a tension that builds up and slowly evolves without ever resolving completely, leaving unanswered questions simmering in the air.
