2004, Temporary Residence
RESTOCK. For seven years, Cerberus Shoal has paved new ground for themselves, ignoring underground and mainstream trends in the most sincere fashion. As a result of this, they have typically been about five years ahead of the curve, exploring ideas and sounds that would later become trademarks of Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor! After a year and a half of continuous touring throughout the US, Canada, and Europe, Cerberus Shoal have returned with their most grandiose gesture yet. "Mr. Boy Dog" marks a noticeable departure in sound, perhaps through retrospective reflection or just a radical change of influence. A monumental accomplishment spanning two discs, "Mr. Boy Dog" blurs the lines between avant rock, jazz, ambient, Middle Eastern and Russian folk, and Gamelan-inspired counterpoint, with seemingly effortless ease. "Mr. Boy Dog" is both fiercely innovative and warmly inviting, and Cerberus Shoal is no longer simply genre-defying, they are genre-defining.
