Z (CD)
#56 Seller of 2005! Z is a richly varied 10-song collection encompassing carefully wrought ballads like "Wordless Chorus" and "Knot Comes Loose," multi-genre jams such as "Off The Record," the silvery country-soul of "Lay Low," and high-energy rockers in the form of "Anytime" and "What A Wonderful Man." The album concludes majestically with "Dondante," a seven-minute opus that weaves together several threads of Louisville-fueled creativity and engagement. MMJ has developed a reputation as one of today's most exciting rock acts and are perhaps the most acclaimed new group to emerge from mid-America in the past few years.![]()

| This is the best r&b boogie-woogie folky alt-country pop rock reggae mash up I've ever heard in my whole life, and that doesn't even begin to describe this sound! My Morning Jacket lose a few old members, add a few new ones, and completely shift gears. Now, instead of sounding like Skynyrd, they sound more like The Stones, and it suits them well. There are more keyboards and less dueling guitars; more noirish ambiance and less jam band work-outs. Jim James' voice is a powerful, rapturous instrument that can be as soft as rain and as big as the ocean, and his lyrics paint a lovely picture of spiritual longing and tell of both the beautiful and morbid secrets swirling in the hearts of man. A sumptuous, scary delight. | |
