Nada Surf
Once in danger of being relegated to "one-hit wonder" status, the power pop outfit Nada Surf soldiered onward after the success of 1996's "Popular," following up a brief residence on the Billboard charts with a slew of solidly crafted albums. Founders Matthew Caws (vocals, guitar) and Daniel Lorca (bass) were longtime school friends, having studied together at the LycTe Frantais de New York in upper Manhattan. After Lorca spent some time abroad in the late '80s, the two reunited after graduation to form Because Because Because in 1991. By 1993, they had jumpe...[more]

This is the NYC trio's first full-length in over four years and is a fascinating departure from their two previous records. "It's over six years since Nada Surf annexed MTV with their sardonic slacker anthem 'Popular', before apparently vanishing into the post-Nirvana one-hit-wonder satchel. But any surprise at the existence of this third LP is nothing compared to the fact of the record's brilliance. Matthew Caws has matured into an acme-level surgeon of life, lyrically smart without clever-clever"--Mojo.

NY's Nada Surf has been together for almost a dozen years, becoming one of America's most resilient and truly independent bands. VINYL FORMAT. The third Nada Surf album, Let Go, is clearly their best work yet. Recorded in 2001, it was produced by Chris Fudurich, who shared mixing duties with Bryce Goggin, Death Cab's Chris Walla, Louie Lino, and Juan Garcia. Influenced by the bands they grew up with (The Soft Boys, The Modern Lovers, Big Star), as well as their like-minded peers (The Flaming Lips, Frank Black, Blonde Redhead), Nada Surf display an eagerness to tinker with stodgy rock formulas, and have made an amazing album w [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. Here it is. Barsuk is proud to bring you The Weight Is A Gift, Nada Surf's sharp, compact, and brilliant follow-up to their acclaimed 2003 masterpiece Let Go. Our heroes Matthew, Daniel and Ira returned to the studio with producer Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, The Thermals) and, and, after some additional time working at home in NYC, delivered a perfect pop album.

The Weezer wannabe tags were certainly understandable when it came to Nada Surf's debut; besides a similarity of intent (a quick, punchy post-grunge pop/rock album with quick, punchy post-grunge pop/rock songs), the production from Ric Ocasek sealed the deal for many. The fact that the band had been going for a while before Weezer's own 1995 splash seems to have been ignored, admittedly. But if Nada Surf never came up with anything that had the influence and lingering impact of {^ [ read more ]

VINYL FORMAT. With The Proximity Effect, Nada Surf set out to make a "good" record and ended up, in their own inimitable way, making a great one. One that didn't wedge itself in any particular subgenre, and, like all great rock records, one that wasn't trying to be anything except what it was: a collection of intelligent songs dealing with break-ups and showdowns, getting drunk and getting over it, fixing yourself for the last time and meeting yourself for the first. The album is built of indelible m [ read more ]

Nada Surf actually completed The Proximity Effect in 1998, whereupon it was released in Europe. But after poor sales in the U.S. (there was no "Popular" on this album), Elektra wasted no time dropping them. Nada Surf eventually regained the rights and have now released it on Mardev, their new self-run label.

RED VINYL FORMAT. If you're not familiar with Nada Surf, you haven't been paying attention to your indie-rock lately. Having released 4 full-length albums over the course of a decade, Nada Surf has compiled an impressive history. Before their major label signing to Elektra, the band released a 5 song EP chock full of indie pop gems with catchy guitar hooks and sharp lyrics. Hi-Speed Soul Records is proud to re-release the Karmic EP - the album that started it all.

The follow-up to 2003's masterpiece, Let Go, is a perfect pop album sure to alleviate the growing breathless anticipation among long-term fans and recent converts. It carries on the contemplative tone that characterized much of Let Go with tracks of heartrending beauty, introspection, wit, and often deceptively dark lyrics, while also displaying the band's penchant for pure pop melody.
